‘Our goal was to win team gold’ – Jersey’s Parker and Watkins after tennis success

by Ryan Smart   Stuart Parker and Michael Watkins secured the gold medal for Jersey in the 2019 Island Games as they beat Menorca in the men’s tennis team final. With four players allowed to represent each team over the course of a round, the final was staged over two singles and one doubles match. Parker won his singles tie 6-4, 6-2 over Menorca’s Oscar Mesquida-Berg, before Oscar’s brother Alex Mesquida-Berg levelled the scores with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Watkins. Sprinter Jessy Franco reigns as he completes fairytale Games story

by Jason Hamburger Jessy Franco smiles after his 200 metres win.  It was a romantic ending to an already unbelievable story as Jessy Franco won gold for Gibraltar in the men’s 200 metres athletics with a time of 22.47 seconds. The 20-year-old national record holder in this event finished the race superbly as he raced past Joe Chadwick from Guernsey to secure gold. Carreras stars in Gibraltar’s first Island Games gold

by George Hodgson On the second day of competition in the 2019 Island Games, Gibraltar won its first gold medal in the women’s tennis team event. Consecutive 3-0 wins over the Isle of Wight and Guernsey in the quarter and semi-finals set up a showpiece final versus the Isle of Man. Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau have issued a set of stamps to commemorate the Gibraltar 2019 NatWest International Island Games The Gibraltar 2019 NatWest International Island Games will be held from 6th to 12th July. The games were awarded to Gibraltar in Jersey back in 2015, and it will be the second time that the games are hosted on the Rock. Competition will centre around fourteen sports, with 2,200 athletes and officials involved in the event. To commemorate the games, a set of fourteen stamps, to depict each sport, has been issued. We would proudly like to announce the name of the NatWest International Island Games Gibraltar mascot as Hope! The name was chosen by a GBC radio listener Katie Rose Martinez. Linda Alvarez, Chair of the Organising Committee stated that the name was quite appropriate as it ties in with our slogan “Clean seas, our future”. It is no coincidence that if you look up the definition of Hope in a thesaurus, you will find synonyms such as Confidence, Courage, Aspiration, etc..
